Regarding Charlie 08 + Soil

by Jon Cairns on September 1, 2011

Bad news, guys. Next week’s page (Charlie 08) is going to be delayed a bit so Renee and I can go to a wedding of our mutual friend (congrats, Scott and Tiffany!). I’ll see if we can get it up later in the week, but no promises. [Ed: Renee suggested I mention that I’ve been doing a trade comic called Indoors with Scott. I really owe that guy a page.]

It’s not all bad news, though. I’ve been working on a science fiction short story for the last couple of months. It’s called Soil. Sometime in late September I’m going to start serializing it in this here journal thing so you guys’ll get two pages of comics a week for a while (one Soil, one Alpha Flag). No solid dates yet. I’ll let you all know when that happens.

That story will also be printed in the NOBODIES anthology published by Drawmore Inc. alongside a really snazzy story called Snake, by Next Town Over creator Erin Mehlos (who I have plugged a million times and will continue to do so!) and a bunch of other cool creators. Renee is coloring one of the stories in it, too! It is going to be excellent.

So, sorry in advance and I hope you will look forward to that, too.

Issue 02, Charlie, State of the Union

by Jon Cairns on July 14, 2011

So here we are. The second issue! This is a huge personal landmark, so I hope you’ll excuse me if I smile too much at the prospect of completing an entire issue of comics.

So here we have the third chapter of Alpha Flag: Charlie (you know, that guy)–the first of two chapters making up Issue 02. In this issue, Charlie takes the Diver out into the world to recover more pieces of his mind. The poor guy’s been through a lot already and, naturally, is about to go through a lot more. That said, I hope I didn’t scare all of the trypophobes away with the small slice of body horror in the last issue, because this one is pretty strange too, and I don’t want to miss a chance to weird anybody out here.

Information on the print version of the first issue can be found here, and digital copies of the first two chapters, Alpha and Bravo, can be found in the store.

I think everything is mostly on track. I’ve loved reading what you guys think about the comic and the pages–it makes me really proud to know that there are lots of cool, intelligent people out there who get what I’m doing (sometimes you guys are really getting to the core of what’s going on in the comments). So thanks for reading, thanks for commenting, and thanks for buying the stuff if you feel like it!

Special Alpha Flag Issue 01 Package

by Jon Cairns on July 9, 2011

The first issue is officially ready to go to print! The first issue collects the first two chapters (Alpha and Bravo) in a comic book with 24 story pages and extras comprising of: an incredibly vague preview of the upcoming chapter (Charlie the chapter!), Renee’s fantastic Bravo cover, and some simulated Foxtrot (that’s the notebook) pages that might or might not provide you some clues as to what’s happening in the story.

In order to celebrate, Renee and I are putting together a special package for those of you who want a little something extra. The package we’ve offering includes the following:

• 1 Copy of Alpha Flag Issue 01 (28 color pages)
• 1 Sketch of either The Diver or Charlie (your choice) by Jon
• 1 Small print drawn and colored by Renee (image TBD)

The package will cost $15.00 for people in the US and $20.00 for people outside the US. The price difference is for shipping, which is included.

I’ve got it set up so you can pay via this nifty PayPal button (which accepts PayPal or a credit/debit card). There wasn’t an address form, so I’ll email you via whatever payment email you use to get that (or if you’re feeling proactive, you can send it to/reach me at jon@alpha-flag.com). Apparently it automatically sends your address! I’ll still send confirmation emails, and email you if it doesn’t, though!

The printer we’re using is a little bogged down with San Diego Comic Con stuff, so it’ll be about a month or so before the books reach your door, but I promise you they will arrive.

[ORDERS CLOSED]

If you want to order multiple issues or have any specific requests or anything, email me (jon@alpha-flag.com) and we can hash it out.

If you just want the issue, that’ll be going on sale at IndyPlanet in about a month. Don’t worry, though, I’ll let you know when it’s available there. It’ll ultimately be $6.00 plus shipping.

As always, Renee and I really appreciate your support. You guys have been great to us so far, so thanks!

Also, if you want the files in digital form, as always, they’re available in the store tab!

Bravo Digital Download for Sale!

by Jon Cairns on July 9, 2011

“Bravo”, the second chapter (the twelve pages of comic, cover, and some extras) of Alpha Flag has been collected neatly into digital form and is available for purchase, starting right now! I’ve put it up in the header in place of the Alpha chapter. You can also find both of them in the Store tab.

Like I said last time, “It’s got some extras in the back that won’t go up on the site, as far as I’m planning now. It’s even got the page that’s coming out tomorrow in it as a pre-thank you for testing this system. Basically, it’s a sweet little condensation of the art side of this site, not cluttered with blog posts, comments, ads and all of that excitingly internetty detritus. You can read it offline, in a comic reader, or on your various digital devices (provided they like CBZ or PDF files)!”

And once again, it costs whatever you want to pay for it. Thanks for buying, downloading and/or just reading Alpha Flag online. We really appreciate it!

If you have any suggestions for what you’d like to see, extras-wise in the future digital downloads let me know and I’ll try to work some suggestions in.

Other Comics: True Hi-School Romance

by Jon Cairns on June 13, 2011

This time I have a real treat. It goes by the name of a complete story. How novel is that?

This one’s a bit different. It’s a collaboration, too, but it was an in-person collaboration. Ray Bruwelhedie came to visit me for a couple days so we could check out comic companies and we thought it would be a excuse to write and draw a short comic together. We literally drew on top of each other’s pencils. It was kind of crazy, but really fun in the end. We were up until the wee hours in the morning for a couple days in the row saying how much A would kill B if B didn’t get to work right now goddammit, then the next night it’d be B telling A the same. It was really motivating, because when given the choice between comics and dying, who would choose dying?

When we were trying to come up with a story, I blurted out “retro-future high school romance comics” because I mainly wanted to draw a panel of a girl with a single tear rolling down her cheek.

Check it, yo. (Then hire Ray for an art job so he’ll do more art. What a slacker.)
